Notes for John JONAS

Served in the Revolutionary War in New Jersey - Capt. Forman's Co. 4th Batt.
See 1823 Equity Suit in "Republican Citizen and Public Advertizer", Maryland
*****
"John Jonas. I know of 3 children: Elizabeth, Adolph and Catharine. Adolph [John's father] died young and left a widow with 5 children: John, Jeremiah, George, Elizabeth and Mary all under 21. A John Jonas appears on the 1790 census fo WASHINGTON CO.,
PA: Males 1 16 and up; 2 under 16; females 3 [In Cumberland Township, same township as Elizabeth Clark - unfortunately in alpha order so impossible to tell who lived next door to each other.]. John's father Adolph died in 1795 at Middlesex Co., NJ".
[BJohnson 4/02]
If John's pension commenced in 1794 there may be a clue as to where he lived at that time in his pension record. Was this a state or federal pension?

"The General Assembly of Maryland in 1777 passed an act giving each
soldier, in a call for 2000 men, 50 acres of land, who had served three years.
In 1781 another act was passed, reserving all the vacant lands in the State
westward of "Fort Cumberland" for the soldiers. In pursuance of these
enactments, in 1787 Francis Dicken and his ten assistants laid off 4,165 50-acre
lots. The commissioned officers were awarded each four 50-acre lots of land; the
private soldiers received only one lot. The records show that 212 officers
were awarded four lots each under the laws, 848 lots in all."
[Note: While transcribing these lists, many names sounded familiar.
So, I checked the pages of the 1800 census I had at home and found over 100
possible matches. These have been included in the second column. The notes
usually indicate spelling differences. Only 209 of the 212 officers awarded
land are included in the newspaper article. Overall, 507 soldiers and
squatters living on the military lots at the time of Francis Dicken's survey are
listed.
One point of interest, very few officers appear to have settled in
Allegany Co.
Names included without a rank, may be either soldiers or squatters.]

no longer exists and has been planted over in pine.

By 1787 a John Jonas was living in Allegany Co., Maryland c/o census taken
that year of those living on pension land. He must have been there 1782 as
well because his daughter Catherine was born in Maryland.
Check 1790 Census!? Was he in MD or PA then? There was also a John Jonas in
Cumberland Twp. Washington Co., PA.
