Notes for Alice Ann CLARK

Ann Clark Hart presumably grew up in San Jose, California. She and Mr. Hart were married at Weyewolde, the family estate in San Jose. Her marriage announcement tells of her qualities - "She is charming and accomplished" and a "woman of
considerable business ability". "She is the sole manager of the enormous estate left by her father, and in order to fit herself for the duties she knew would ultimately fall upon her she took a course at the Hastings Law School while yet her father
lived to guide her with his wise counsel. Besides her business qualities she excels as a sportswoman, is an excellent driver and a fine swimmer." [San Francisco Call, Tuesday, 25 July 1899]
She earned an LL.B. degree from the University of California, 1895. She authored "Abraham Clark, Signer of the Declaration of Independence" (1923). She was a talented researcher and member of the I.A.G. She and her husband divided their time
between San Francisco and their residence Weyewolde, on Shirley Avenue in San Jose (the Alameda). She also authored a history of Clark's Point in San Francisco, published by Pioneer Press in 1937, and a genealogy of the Abraham Clark family published
in the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey [Vol. 7]. It was reprinted in "Genealogies of New Jersey Families [Vol. 1:145]. A tribute to her was written by Warren R. Howell and published in the California Historical Society Quarterly Vol. 35, #4
[December 1956]. p. 375.
In character she was a very stong willed and opinionated woman, who was obviously well educated and dedicated to the preservation of genealogy and history. In her will she bequeathed the majority of her library of over 10,000 volumes to the
California Historical Society. She and her husband had no children.
