Notes for Jonas CLARK

Had five sons and two daughters. GMNJ 7:102.
From SAR records: JONAS CLARK, died February 23, 1899. (3805.) Son of Jonathan and Catherine Clark; grandson of Thomas and Elizabeth (Dixon) Clark; great-grandson of Abraham Clark, Signer of the Declaration of Independence. [p.627]
Jonas Clark, son of Jonathan Clark and Catherine Jonas, attempted to join the SAR on The Signers lineage a few years after it was organized and his first application was turned down. (I didn't think they turned anyone down in the old days before proof
was required, but evidently they had a slightly different criteria for descendants of any of the Signers.) After a heated exchange of letters, Jonas applied again, this time with a deposition which was offered as "proof" - and evidently accepted:

in 1880 note "nativity not known by any of their neighbors" plus obvious
guess at ages.
