From the Bend Bulletin:

Leslie Merl Ross, a former Deschutes County Assessor, died Saturday
at St. Charles Medical Center.
He will be buried at Deschutes Memorial Gardens, where a graveside
service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Thomas Shelton of First
Christian Church of Bend and the Rev. D. L. Penhollow of the Powell Butte
Christian Church will officiate.
Mr. Ross made his home at 1506 Galveston Ave. with his wife, the
former Neola Reinhart. They were married in Bend Oct. 1, 1937.
Mr. Ross was assessor from 1949 t0 1959. Later he did tax work for
LELCO, Inc. In earlier years he worked for The Shevlin-Hixon Company in
the box factory. He was a Bend resident since 1927.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, Deschutes Pioneers
Association and American Association of Retired Persons, and had belonged
to the Bend Kiwanis Club. He was active in Boy Scouts of America.
He was born April 6, 1906, in Farber, Mo., to Mr. and Mrs. William
Spencer Ross. He was graduated from high school in Wellsville, Mo., and
attended Blackburn College in Illinois.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, NeBe McClain,
Bend, and two sons; Leslie William Ross, Sunnyvale, Calif.; and Virgil
(Bud) Ross, Bend. There are three grandchildren.
He leaves a sister, Marguerite Sullivan, and two brothers, Virgil

Hamilton, whose funeral was held Saturday. Mrs. Ross and Mrs. Hamilton
are sisters.
Mr. Ross's family suggested that friends who wish to make memorial
gifts contribute to the Cardiac Care Unit at St. Charles Medical Center,
2500 NE Neff Road, Bend, Ore. 97701.

Some thoughts about the funeral by his son, Leslie William (Bill) Ross
Feb. 17, 1983.
Dad's funeral was held at Deschutes Memorial Gardens in Bend, Oregon
this past Tuesday. He liked the spot - it used to be called "Patchy
Pastures" because rock outcropings formed the alpha-alpha fields into a
patchwork of rocks and fields. Some years ago this area was converted
into a graveyard - Dad loved the place both as farmland and as a
beautiful grave site. It has a breathtaking view of the Cascade
Mountains. The casket which Mom, NeBe and Bud chose looked like
something Dad would have made himself. It was wood (looked like pine),
was unstained and had a light color.
The service was conducted by Rev. Thomas Shelton who is the present
Minister of the Bend First Christian Church and Rev. D. L. Penhollow who
is Pastor of the Powell Butte Community Church and has known Dad for 50
years or more. As the service began, the traffic on the highway
(Bend-Redmond) increased then cleared, the temperature about 40 degrees
dropped as the winds came in from the mountains. In the first row,
nearest the casket, a row of four chairs were set up and Mom, Forest and
Gram (Mrs. Gladys Reinhart) were seated. In the second row standing were
Bud, Ross McClain, Willy McClain, Bill and others. Mr. Tom Shelton
conducted the service and Mr. D. L. Penhollow talked about meeting Dad
when he was President or Treasurer of the Central Union of Christian
Endeavor and Marie Burgess was Secretary (later Penny's wife). He also
recalled how "Cotton" would fill in for him at the Powell Butte
Community Church when he needed someone to preach a sermon. I thought
the service was exceptionally nice and I am certain Dad would have liked
it.
