Wayne Benjamin Hamilton
Wayne Benjamin Hamilton, Bend's first director of parks and
recreation, died early today at his home at 504 NW Congress St. He was
68.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Christian
Church, 334 NW Newport Ave. The Rev. Tom Shelton will officiate.
Mr. Hamilton's survivors include his wife, the former Virginia
Reinhart. They were married in Bend on April 5, 1940.
Mr. Hamilton is recognized as the founder of Little League baseball
in Oregon. The program for children was established when he was Bend
parks and recreation director, and the movement quickly spread throughout
the state.
After leaving his employment with the city, he worked for the State
of Oregon as a juvenile parole counselor until 1981. Recently he has
been bailiff for circuit court.
He was active in the First Christian Church, and was well known in
the local area as a vocal soloist. He was formerly active in the Kiwanis
Club.
He was born Nov. 29, 1914, in Hingham, Mont. His parents were Ben
and Elsa (Acton) Hamilton. The family came to Bend in 1918.
Mr. Hamilton graduated from Bend High School in 1933, and attended
Oregon State University, where he was active in sports and music, for
three years.
In addition to his wife, his survivors include a daughter, Judith
(Mrs. Steve) Bradbury, Bend; and a son, W. B. (Ben) Hamilton, Madras.
He leaves a sister, Evelyn Schaefer, Kailua, Hawaii; two
granddaughters and two grandsons.
The family suggested that friends who wish to make memorial gifts
contribute to the Oregon Heart Association, 1500 SW 12th, Portland, Ore.

The body was cremated.
The Niswonger-Reynolds Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
