Notes for John CLARK

John Clark was mentioned in the will of John Harriman, written on 17 February 1730 as his "son-in-law". John and Abigail, along with their children, were given the "plantation adjoining the lands of Benjamin Pierson, Benjamin Meeker, and Captain Ebenezer Lyon; land I purchased of my father-in-law Isaac Whitehead of Elizabethtown, deceased; land in partnership with my brothers Richard and Stephen Harriman; lands adjoining lands of Benjamin Parkhurst, deceased, William Ogden and Capt. Daniell Price". The will was proved 22 March 1730. (NJ State Archives, Essex County Wills, Liber B, p. 202)
It is likely that John and his wife were buried in the First Presbyterian Churchyard in Elizabethtown, although no stone marks their graves. There is a plot containing tombstones of their son and grandson, both named John. It is curious to note that in the same plot are found the following stones:

# 179: "Here Lyeth Ye Body Of Henry Clarke jun Decd Feb ye 10th 1732 in the 25th Year of his Age" [thus born c. 1707] [quick check of CD yielded no probate records for him, but archives may prove better resource]
# 180: "Mary the Wife of William Clark who deceas'd Novr the 18th A.D. 1762 In ye 21st Year of her Age" (thus born c. 1741)

#1084: "In Memory of Elizabeth, Wife of Wm Clark who departed this life January 11th 1813 In the 70th Year of her Age" (thus born c. 1743).[ Need to check newspapers/probate for this person.]

The origin and relationship of these individuals to the Clark family has yet to be determined, although it would make sense to place Henry as John's brother. It is a possibility that John Clark was a descendant of Richard Clark, an early settler of Elizabethtown in the 1600's, but that has not been proven. Another possibility is that he is the son of William Clark, son of Samuel of Southhampton, Long Island, which seems likely, but remains to be proven.
