Notes for Amey HOPKINS

Amey's father was the first Commodore of the United States Navy and a distinguished and controversial figure in Rhode Island history. Her uncle Stephen Hopkins was a signer of the Declaration of Independence from Rhode Island, and her brother John Burroughs Hopkins was also a Commodore in the Navy. Her father's house still stands in North Providence (April 1996).
On 24 October, 1797 she married Judge John Dorrance of Providence, probably in North Providence.[ "Mrs. Amey, of North Providence, and Hon. John Dorrance" as mentioned in the Providence Gazette of 21 Oct 1797]. He was a graduate of the class of 1774 at Brown University, and afterwards a tutor at that institution. He died in 1813 and is buried in the same cemetery as his wife.
