Notes for Samuel Stillman SUMNER

Samuel Stillwell Sumner was the firstborn child of his parents. He attended Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island and graduated in the class of 1835. He then became a Baptist minister. By 1848 the family was living in New Castle, Henry County, Kentucky, and by 1859 he was president of a female college there. In 1860 he and his wife were separated, as Samuel had become attracted to a female piano teacher who boarded with the family. He and his wife were divorced, and "Ellen" became Samuel's second wife. He served as chaplain in the 22nd Kentucky Volunteers from 12 December 1861 until March 1864. He then married Helen L. Hubbard 17 April 1864 at Fredonia, New York and they lived in Washington, D.C. where he worked for the government. Samuel died there 24 October 1884 and was buried in Fredonia.
