From the Metropolitan Museum of Art (on the web 6/19/01:
The Brooklyn Museum of Art is lending a pair of pilasters and a mahogany door with a pedimented frame from Clarkson Lawn, a grand Grecian house built in Brooklyn in the mid-1830s. Joseph Meeks and Sons, one of the most prolific New York cabinetmaking firms of the period, is represented by a bold mahogany-veneered pier table (ca. 1835; private collection) with curvilinear supports, and also by a hand-colored broadside, a rare lithograph of enormous importance to the history of American furniture, which shows the firm's product line in 1833.

Also...
The Furniture Collection covers the period 1680 to 1950, and includes many labeled examples by New York cabinetmakers. Among those New York City cabinetmakers represented are: Thomas Burling (working 1769-1802), Michael Allison (1773-1855), Richard Allison (1780-1825), Duncan Phyfe (1768-1854), Joseph Meeks and Sons (working 1829-1835), John and Joseph W. Meeks (working 1836-1860), Alexander Roux (1813-1886), George Platt (1812-1873), George Hunzinger (working 1866-1899) Leon Marcotte, and others. [NY State Museum, Albany, NY]

And from http://www.northeastjournal.com/PastStories/october99/nyccabinetmakers1099.htm
Early in the century, cabinetmaker Michael Allison established his shop in the 3rd Ward on Vesey Street and remained on that street his entire career. The 1850 census shows Allison, now age 77, occupation - cabinetmaker, still living in the area. He was probably retired at the time of the census, but kept the craftsman's title.

The Meeks brothers, John and Joseph W., also found Vesey Street appealing, establishing their shop at 14 Vesey in 1836 following a fire in the neighborhood of their father's original shop on Broad Street. By mid-century, their father, Joseph, in his late 70s, was a very wealthy man and still lived in the area, south of Canal Street. Joseph W. lived nearby.
