The deceased was a native of New York and came of a sturdy family of that State. In 1849 he, with a number of young men of the Atlantic seaboard, sailed for California in the old ship Niantic, which was beached at the corner of Clay and Sansome streets, where she remained and was used as a hotel. Meeks made several fortunes mining, but lost in other ventures. Later he engaged in the practice of law. He leaves a widow who he married almost fifty years ago.
