Notes for Gen. Joseph HALSEY

Thomas Halsey, by J.L. & E. D. Halsey (1895), No. 1224, pages 49, 67. Will
dated June 1, 1765, proved March 25, 1772 (recorded in Trenton, N.J.). Names
wife Abigail, sons Joseph, Daniel, Isaac, son-in-law James Miller, daus.
Abigail Miller, Rebecca Miller, Sarah Conklin, Hannah Miller, Debro Magee,
and Anna Halsey. He lived near the Wheatsheaf Tavern, between Rahway and
Elizabeth.
General Halsey is a good example of the poor quality of research found in the 1995 book, "Halsey Genealogy Since 1395 A.D." by David Halsey (Heritage Books, Inc. 1995). David Halsey, following most other published works, has the General born about
1695. He shows his mother, however, as Elizabeth Eldredg, with date of marriage as 29 Jan 1696/97. General Halsey's mother was Elizabeth Halsey, a cousin of his father. Further, David Halsey in the new book, lists only one child for Gen. Joseph.
All this without any references or sources, and with no explanation as to why he was not following prior published works. [If David Halsey has information that General Halsey was illegitimate, one would think he would supply the source.] Nor is there
reason to believe that Gen. Joseph's mother had died and his father had remarried an Eldredg, for it seems clear that his mother survived his father -- see notes under her entry.
