Notes for John STITES


The Hon. John Stites, ancestor of many honored citizens of New Jersey, was
born at Hempstead, Long Island, in 1706, and died at Springfield, New Jersey,
April 21, 1782. He was a Chosen Freeholder and Justice of Etown, and a Deputy
in the Provincial Congress of New Jersey in 1775. As his tombstone at
Springfield tells us, he "lived beloved and died lamented by Church and
