Notes for Edward CLARK


Maj. Edward 5 Clark, son of Jesse 4 and Charity (Scudder) Clark, was born at Westfield Aug 4, 1761. He was md. at Wf. Feb. 5, 1783 to Phebe Baker, dau. of Nathaniel and Abigail (Conkling) Baker, who was born Nov. 23, 1760. He served as private in
Capt. Scudders Company of the Second Regiment of Essex Co., troops in the Rev. War. His title of Major was probably earned in the local militia after the war. He died April 12, 1803 and his wife died June 29, 1855, aged 95. "Both are buried at
Rahway". [C.C.Gardner collections, page 129]. [NOTE: Actually both Edward and Phebe are buried in the Colonial Cemetery, Westfield, Union County, New Jersey]

Clark, Phebe (Edward) N.J. 1848
Livingston Co., N.Y., 9 Jan 1856, Charity Clark [s] and Lewis Clark [s], children of late pensioner Phebe Clark (late widow of Edward Clark, former private in Rev.) who resided at her death in Essex Co., N.J., appoint Thomas J. Stryker atty to collect
arrears due from 4 Mar 1855 to 29 Jnu 1855, the day of her death; sworn before Seymour N. Thorpe J.P. [s]; witness L. Suisder [s].
Essex Co., N.J., 29 jan 1856, Mary Frazee [s] and John B. Clark [s], other children of Phebe Clark, make oaths that she resided in this county at least 50 years, and appoint same atty; sworn before John M. Clark J.P. [s]; witness Ephraim Clark [s].
Same date, county certification states these four are Phebe's only surviving children; signed by James J. Terhune [s], Clerk of CCP.
Trenton, 1 Feb 1856, Thos. J. Stryker [s] colected $18.09; his oath heard same date and place by Phil. Dickinson [s], Pension Agent.
