46. Asa HINKLE (H#623) 5,6 was born on 11 Apr 1778 in , Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and died on 7 Sep 1831 in St. Marys, Anglaize County, Ohio at age 53.
General Notes: 6231 Asa Hinkle born April 11, 1778 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; died in 1831 on Mill Creek, Hamilton County, Ohio; married 1797 in Virginia to Mary Brecount born May 16, 1780 (about 1773 in New Jersey in Census of 1850, St Marys
Township, Anglaize County, Ohio. Lived with son David M. Hinkle (#62317)). Parents of twelve (12) children. Reference: Reverend E. H. Hinkle of Trenton, Nebraska
Asa Hinkle served in the War of 1812-14 against Great Britain as Captain in the First Regiment (Sutton's) Ohio Militia. Appointed Captain August 11, 1812. Enlisted for six months, received pay at rate of $40.00 per month and was called August 11, 1812
until February 11, 1813.
In the 1820 Census of Sycamore Township, Hamilton County, Ohio, Captain Asa Hinkle enumerated with wife, six sons and two daughters.
Asa Hinkle (1778-1831) moved to St.. Mary's, Auglaize County by 1824, and probably in 1820-1821. Auglaize county was just being formed (actually was part of Mercer and Allen Counties at this time. St.. Mary's had been a depot in the 1812 War. Asa was
one of 29 taxed male citizens in 1824, and one of 80 taxed male citizens in 1830. Asa was commissioned, along with John Johnson, to locate the State road from Sidney to St.. Marys for $3.90. Asa Hinkle built the first county jail, sold in Dec. 1825.
for which he received 5 lots (31,34,37,42 and 50) and $50.
The 1820-1 estimate for arrival in Auglaize County is based on Henry Smith's arrival in Auglaize from Hamilton County in 1820-1. Henry Smith married A Elizabeth Hinkle, and raised 8 children in St. Marys Twp. All but one was born in St.. Marys Twp. I'm
guessing that Elizabeth Hinkle and Asa Hinkle are related.
Asa and Mary are buried in the Murray Graveyard in St.. Mary's Ohio, which is now located in the town's recreation area south west of the city. Other's buried in Murray Graveyard
