Notes for Addison Scudder CLARK

History of Union County (Pub. 1897), page 544. He was in the Civil War, and the Alexander Library at Rutgers University has letters that he wrote from the field to his friends and family in New Jersey between 1861-65. They also have material that
he wrote on a voyage around Cape Horn to California and other writings from 1849-54. He was a clerk in the Quartermasters Department and was stationed at Savannah in 1865.
"Addison S. Clark was surrogate of Union County for fifteen years; local postmaster in both Cleveland administrations and freeholder for several terms. His son, who bears his name, has been tax collector for forty years. He was once the fleetest
skater in the town and, to catch him at pullaway, the "ins" had to spread from one side of the pond to the other." [The Olde Towne", Robert V. Hoffmann]
Westfield Historical Society - "Freeholder 1860-61; member of Assembly, November 11, 1867-1877; Justice of Peace 1882; Town Committee of Westfield 1858; Collector of Taxes; graduate of Princeton College."
He was likely born in Savannah, Georgia as all census records indicate that state and his father was in business in Savannah at that time.
*****
See this family 1880 Census Westfield 243/250 - he indicates Georgia as his POB.
