Scotch Plains:
A Sarah Pearce was an organizing member of the Baptist Church in 1747. John
Parse died between June and August 1777 leaving wife Marta, and sons:
Philip, Michael, Melvin and Thomas (they lived near William Darby). Melvin
remained in Scotch Plains. His brothers, Michael and Philip Pearce, went to
Ohio. Don't know what happened to Thomas. Perhaps Sarah was John's mother
but I don't know that.
Patty Parse obtained for dying Mrs. Jemima Piatt Shotwell her featherbed
from Jemima's granddaughter Caroline who had appropriated it.
Melvin Parse was born April 22, 1744, married Hannah Badgley and died
December 10, 1827, and was buried in the Old Cemetery in Scotch Plains,
along with others with these surnames who stayed behind.
Philip Pearce (probably this one, per online information) b. 1748 - 10, Oct.
1821. Married Mary Lyons (15 June 1745 - 26 Aug. 1829 (gravestones for them
in PA, possibly Springfield, Fayette Co.). Children: Rhoda (b. 1767) m.
William Griffin (believe they had a son, William Pearse Griffin); Phebe,
Mary m. Richard Evans, Abner, Sally and Nancy. There might have been a son,
Duvall John, as well. Have found nothing more on these folk.
Michael Pearce
Michael Pearce, a veteran, was also a shopkeeper. His wife was Phebe
Squier. One of her grandfathers was Ellis Squier. When Michael applied for
his pension he stated that he was born in Scotch Plains, Essex County, NJ,
August 27, 1750, married Phebe Squire there and moved to OH July 10, 1802.
Michael Pearce settled in Butler Co., OH where he developed an extensive
farm near Trenton and died there June 4, 1838, age 87 (also reported as 89).
He had 11 children, 34 grandchildren and 15 g grandchildren at that time.
His daughters were married to the Littells and other old surnames. His son,
Ellis Pearce, was of a regressive mind but he worked about as a farmhand and
his father left provision for him in his will. Most of Michael's children
were females. There may have been one other male besides Ellis, who may
have died young. [there is more information on this post....]
