Notes for Samuel STOCKTON

July 17, 1971: Morven, the Stockton family mansion in Princeton, built in 1730 in the Georgian style, was designated a National Historic Landmark. The Stockton family sold the estate to Governor Walter Edge in 1944, with the proviso that he would leave
it to the state in his will. Edge transferred ownership to the state in 1954. Morven served as the official New Jersey governor’s residence from 1944 to 1981. It is currently a museum.
