Notes for Charity WOODRUFF

WOODRUFF CHRONICLES, VOL. II, page 47, listed under children of John Cooper
Woodruff and his 1st wife, Mary Mitchell, is #6. "Charity (6) Woodruff, no
other record available to the compilers except the Baptismal record at St.
John's Episcopal Church when four of these children were baptized June 16,
1766."
See Genealogical Magazine of N.J. Vol. III, No. 3, page 88, under listing of Baptismal Register of St. John's Church, Elizabeth, for 1766,:
" June 16. Woodruff, Cooper -- Sarah; John Cooper; Elizabeth; Mary; Charity Burnet."
We know from family records, and burial at Old Cemetery in Westfield, N.J., that Charity Woodruff, wife of Matthias Clark, was born 22 June 1755 and died 2 July 1817. That birthdate is consistent with the St. John's Baptism, particularly since
the other three children baptised the same day (June 16, 1766) are listed in Woodruff Chronicles with birthdate as Elizabeth b. ca. 1756/57; Mary b. 1764, and John C. Woodruff, Jr., 1763.

In 1810 Charity Clark and Jonathan Woodruff (very likely her legal
representative) were involved in an Orphans Court ruling regarding the estate
of her husband. Apparently there were not enough funds to pay his creditors
after his death, and they had to sell 5 acres of land for $75 at public
vendue at Charles Gilman's store. [refer to Docket 911910 Essex County
Surrogate's Dockets?]
