Obituary 13 August 1891 "Henry News Republican", Henry, Marshall Co., Illinois:
"Robert Nelson Clark was born in Rahway township, Essex county, N.J., Oct. 16, 1814. He was one of nine children, the only one left being Mrs. Margaret Denman of Kansas. Was a descendant of the brother of Abram Clark, the signer of the Declaration of
Independence [incorrect!], which family came to America in the sixteenth century. The residence of this worthy ancestor was but half a mile from the old homestead of R.N. Clark, which had been bought of the Indians by his forefathers. January 22, 1839
was married to Mary M. Boylston, soon after which moving to the family where the family resided till coming to Illinois. He was a mason by trade, and a very expert workman. In his youthful days there was a long apprenticeship, and the boss, as was his
custom, gave the apprentice upon serving his time a gift of $5. In the case of Mr. Clark, so satisfactory had he served that his employer presented him with $50. He came to Henry in 1866, and built a store where he conducted the hardware business until
the spring of 1875. He also built the two story residence on Main street in 1867, where he spent the remainder of his days. He was a member of the town committee, and served as a member of the board of education for several terms before coming west. He
was also elected as a city councilman of Henry for two years. His character was that of a good citizen, and having filled the measure allotted to man, leaves the stage of action, with the record of a faithful servant and respect of all.
The funeral was held at the New Jerusalem church on Wednesday morning, Rev. C. W. Ayling, pastor of the M.E. Church, officiating. He leaves a wife, one son in New Jersey, and one daughter, wife of W.E. Clark of this city, and eight grandchildren,
four in New Jersey and four in Henry."
