Notes for Jonathan CLARK

C.C.Gardner, page 53: Jonathan 3 Clark, son of Samuel 2 and Susanna Clark, was born at E.T. 169-70. On April 23, 1730, Jonathon Clark of E.T. cordwiner, and Hannah, his wife, deeded to Ezekiel Sayre, for 52 points 100 acres in Elizabethtown,
being a division of land laid out for Samuel Clark Feb. 24, 1699-1700. He lived in or near what is now Westfield, his will, dated Sept. 6, probated Oct. 14, 1748, names his four children, all minors, and "my brothers and friends John Potter and John
Clark, both of the Borough of Elizabeth. Was Jonathans' wife perhaps a "Potter?" [ See discussion under Hannah].
9/6/1748 Jonathan Clark of Elizabeth, Essex Co., cordwinder; will of. Children - Mathias, Sarah, David and Jonathan Clark, all under age. Real and personal estate. Executors - brothers, and friends John Potter, weaver, and John Clark, cord-winder.
Witnesses - Jonathan Allen, Caleb Osborn, Jun'r, Jonathan Osborn. Proved 10/14/1748. [Mr. Clark seems a bit old to have had children "under age." Perhaps this will is actually for another Jonathan Clark? Or Jonathan's [1690- ?] son?
We have examined the work of Helen Potter Alleman, including her "Descendants of Deacon Samuel Potter" for a John Potter who might have been the "brother and friend" of Jonathan Clark, but to date we have not found one who would "fit". Deacon
Samuel Potter's son Joseph, had a son John Potter, but he was born in 1729, and would have been "underage" in 1748 when Jonathan Clark wrote his will.
It is also possible that the "brother and friend" John Potter was the husband of one of Jonathan's sisters. His sisters were Susannah, Sarah and Elizabeth, and we have no further information on any of them. Research is required to see if
there is any John Potter who married a Susannah, Sarah or Elizabeth whose surname could have been Clark.
Gardner lists Jonathan as the father of the David Clark, born 1719, who married Sarah Clark, daughter of Joshua Clark -- David and Sarah being parents of Matthias Clark, and ancestors of Harman R. Clark, Jr. However that David, being born
1719, was 29 years old at the time Jonathan made his will in 1748 decribing his children as under age.

Rootsweb's Woogerd/Nelson Family Tree [Ancestral file GVT0-LX/LDS baptism 31 May 1946/endowment 20 June 1947] for David Ward Clark used records of Jonathan Clark's will, inventory of David Clark's estate in August 1806/1807[?]; the records of R.D.
Clark of Mt. Pulaski, Illinois on microfilm from grandson Prof. R.W. Mayer; and records of Daisy (Dement) Gandy to show David's relationship to Jonathan. This should be rechecked for accuracy and additional information.
