Notes for Matthias CLARK

Gardner says possibly the one who was m. to Anna Pierson at New Prov.2/25/66;
C.C. Gardner, Vol. 29, Clark, page 53.
This Matthias Clark seems to be the earliest Clark with the first name Matthias. In view of the frequent use of "Matthias" as a name in the Clark family by sons of William 2 Clark [Samuel 1], particularly David 3 Clark [#17 in this program and a
direct ancestor of Harman Reed Clark, Jr.], one wonders if that factor influenced C. C. Gardner in "assigning" David (b. 1719 d. 3 Apr 1779) to be a brother of this Matthias, despite the evidence to the contrary.
How the name "Matthias" originated in this family, or any of the other Clarks, is currently speculation. The first name Matthias was in long use in the Hatfield/Hetfield family, and the frequency of intermarriages may suggest that source. We
should also understand that the Clark families were English, not Dutch, and did not adhere to any rigid naming standards, frequently selecting first names from favorite relatives and friends, rather than following the Dutch system of grandparents, etc.
Possibly had a daugher who married a Lyon, based on the fact that there was
a Matthias Clark Lyon [died 1819 Newark], son of Matthias Lyon. But then
Matthias Clark Lyon could have been named after his father. In that case his
mother still may have been a Clark, given the middle name of "Clark,"
