Notes for John Wheeler FOSTER

John's first marriage was to Patty Griffin [or Griffith], with whom he had John, Miriam, Maria, Charles, Eliza and Martha Foster. [Littell]. Miriam supposedly married Matthias Hand. Note that there is a woman named Eliza M. Foster buried next to John W. Foster in the Colonial Cemetery. She was the wife of John W. Foster's son John.
In 1850 John and Rhoda lived in Westfield with Phebe Allen, Rhoda's mother and widow of Rice Price and her second husband Zachariah Allen (Family #118/125). The Foster home was near the present site of the Children's Hospital in Mountainside, New Jersey.
John Wheeler Foster left a will, 14203G, that needs to be checked. Was an obituary published for him?
From Littell:
TIMOTHY GRIFFIN.
TIMOTHY GRIFFIN married Catherine Sayre, daughter of Isaac Sayre, of Springfield Township, and had children: (2d Generation.)
1. Jane, who married, 1st, Francis Brown; 2d, Robert Sweetman
2. Thomas married Triphena Foster.
3. Patty married John Wheeler Foster, of Westfield.
4. Isaac married Betsey Musty, of Shrewsbury, Monmouth county.
5. Frazee died unmarried.
6. Betsey married Charles Graves.
7. Rachel married John Gray.
8. Prudence married, 1st, Charles Delaney; 2d, William R. Vigers, a Frenchman.
9. Mary married Peter Maverick, engraver, of New York.
10. Ephraim married Effa Simpson, daughter of John Simpson.
11. Timothy died unmarried.
12. William died in infancy.
13. William S. married in New York, and died leaving one child.
PATTY GRIFFIN, (daughter of Timothy,) and John W. Foster, had children: (3d Gen.)
1. John Foster, who married Betsey Miller, lives in Westfield.
2. Miriam Foster married Matthias Hand, son of Nehemiah. [See Hand.]

Thus, did John have a sister Triphena who married his wife's brother Thomas Griffin?
John W. Foster was one of the Overseers of the Poor on Westfield in the 1820's. Several documents in the files of the Westfield Historical Society bear his signature as such.
*****
John W. Foster is on Westfield tax lists in 1810-1814
*****
Possibly son of Job Foster 1734-1793...need to check settlement of estate NJSA... Liber 33, p. 215; Fle 7700-7703G; died Intestate. He apparently had a sister named Mary who married Ephraim Wheeler [1718-1753]. Or....John W. may be the grandson of their elder brother Joseph who died in 1742 with his wife expecting a child.

- 1737, Dec. 22 Nathan Foster of Newark; wife Mary; son Joseph [Lib. C, p 190]

There is also the possibility that John W. Foster is descended from an entirely unique Foster family.
