Notes for Azariah CLARK

Azariah Clark was a Captain in the Essex County Militia during the Revolutionary War. His Revolutionary War service record indicates that he was also a Corporal in Captain Samuel Potter's Company, Colonel Dayton's Battalion. Azariah appears on the muster rolls of the company February 8 to November 23, 1776 and in a roll dated in camp at Fort Ticondaroga, New York 23 November 1776. He is also on a roll dated 24 November 1776 through 23 February 1777 at Fort Independence, and was sent sick to Albany on February 22nd. [Compiled Service Records of Revolutionary War Soldiers, Roll #0639]
By 1794 Mr. Clark operated a tavern in Westfield. On 4 October 1795 he bought a half ownership in a schooner 'Rainbow' from Elijah Crane and John Crane, Jr. for "one hundred and ten pounds lawful currency of the state of New York". In 1808 Mr. Clark was a Trustee of the Westfield Presbyterian Church.
There is a deed (date?) on record from Matthais Halsted of Perth Amboy to Azariah Clark for 70 acres located in Rahway in the Township of Elizabeth. The land was occupied by Samuel and William Betts at the time of sale, and was purchased by Halsted from Daniel Baldwin and Elihu Woodruff, and was bordered northerly by the Rahway River, east by the land of Daniel Marsh, Esq, the Rahway Meeting House lot, and by the country road, south by the road from Bridgetown to Westfield, and west by the land of Daniel Marsh, Esq.
It is presumed that the Clarks had no children. or none that survived to adulthood.
